Hans Matthießen
Hans Eduard Christian Matthießen (born December 21, 1895 in Farnewinkel ( Meldorf parish ), † June 6, 1975 Lübeck ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran pastor and state superintendent for Lauenburg , based in Ratzeburg .
Professional background
After his ordination in 1923, Matthießen first became provincial vicar and later pastor in Odenbüll on Nordstrand .
In 1928 he went to Sant'Ilario near Genoa as a seaman's pastor . After his return to Germany in 1934 he was appointed to the pastorate in Sahms .
From 1944 to 1959 he was state superintendent for Lauenburg and at the same time pastor at St. Petri-Ratzeburg .
Matthießen, who had been with the “ German Christians ” in the early 1930s and now bitterly regretted his “sins”, was one of the “eleven personalities of different backgrounds” who called for the elections for the provost synods and the provisional synod in June 1945 signed. Under his chairmanship, the provisional "Lauenburg Synod" met on July 18, 1945, at which the repeal of all laws and measures of the National Socialists was demanded. Matthießen offered to resign, but was held in office by the Lauenburg Synod.
The first years of his tenure as state superintendent were characterized by the church and diaconal care of the refugees who had flown into the district area and their integration into the existing parishes. For this, Matthießen received an honorary theological doctorate in Kiel.
On July 13, 1952, Matthießen inaugurated the "Swedish Church" in Grünhof-Tesperhude ( Geesthacht ), which was built from Swedish donations . It was named St. Thomas Church after the large altar painting by the Swedish painter Gerda Höglund, which shows the disciple Thomas before the risen Christ.
