Johannes Hermann Meissel , also Hans Meissel (born February 27, 1888 in Neudietendorf ; † April 8, 1969 ibid) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

Johannes Meissel attended school in Neudietendorf from 1894 and in 1902 entered the teachers' seminar of the Moravian Brethren in Niesky . In 1908 he was hired as a drawing teacher at the Moravian Pedagogy in Niesky. In Görlitz he completed his military service from 1910 to 1911. From 1913 to 1914 he studied painting and graphics at the royal art school in Berlin. After taking part in the First World War from 1914 to 1918, he became a drawing teacher in Berlin. From 1943 to 1945 he was a drawing and biology teacher in Niesky and from 1945 to 1947 a teacher at the Neudietendorf elementary school. He then worked as a freelance artist until 1967.

Some of his works were kept in the expressionist style. Since his Berlin studio was destroyed by flames in 1943 with the majority of his pictures, only a few of his works have survived. What was left is a gift from the heirs and other private owners in the local history museum in Ingersleben .

The painting Soli Deo Gloria , which Willi Berger painted on three segments of the wall in the so-called East Side Gallery , achieved international attention . Another public work is the so-called Zinzendorf plaque from 1950, which can be seen on the fountain on Zinzendorfplatz in Neudietendorf.

The Johannes-Meissel-Weg and the senior citizens' meeting center Johannes Meissel in Neudietendorf are named after him. His grave is on the churchyard of the Brethren in Neudietendorf.

Painting Soli Deo Gloria

Soli Deo Gloria , copy of a painting by Johannes Meissel, by his student Willi Berger

In the spring of 1990 a piece of the east side of the Berlin Wall was released for an art project, which became internationally known under the expression East Side Gallery . The East German painter Willi Berger chose a previously unpublished picture by his teacher Meissel as a motif. When naming the picture Soli Deo Gloria , the tradition of earlier composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach was followed.

Berger added the following text dedication to the wall picture:

The painter Hans Meissel (1888–1969) was banned from exhibiting in
both the Third Reich and the
GDR because of
his expressive painting style. With
“God alone the honor” he set a monument to JS Bach's
last composition, the art of the fugue
.

With the copy of the first published
picture, I would like to thank my teacher.
