Johannes Mertens (politician)

John Mertens (* 25. April 1935 in Münster ; † 27. November 1999 ) was a German politician of the CDU and member of the Hamburg Parliament .

Life

Mertens graduated from high school in 1954 and passed his examination in 1956 to become a wholesale and foreign trade merchant. This was followed in 1959 by the examination to become a qualified commercial teacher. From 1961 he worked as a teacher and from 1968 as senior director and headmaster of the business school in the City North . In 1997 he retired. He was married and had three children.

politics

Mertens joined the CDU in 1974 and was district chairman of the CDU Hamburg-Eimsbüttel . From June 1982 until his death he sat for the CDU in the Hamburg parliament. There he worked for the CDU parliamentary group on the Committee on the Situation and Rights of Foreigners, the Committee on Home Affairs and the Public Service and on the Budget Committee. Another focus of his political work was school and social policy. He also works on the so-called “Filz” committee of inquiry .

The then mayor Ortwin Runde wrote in 1999 in his letter of condolence to the politician's wife: “Johannes Mertens had taken the mandate's obligations seriously, he was a fair, reliable and competent fighter in the matter Particularly rendered outstanding for our city through his exemplary engagement in the Hamburg citizenship. Across party lines, we will always keep Johannes Mertens in fond memories. "
