Johannes Franciskus Osten (born September 14, 1879 in Batavia , Dutch East Indies , † March 27, 1965 in The Hague ) was a Dutch fencer and vice admiral .
Life
Johannes Osten took part in the 1906 Olympic Intermediate Games in Athens . Here he won bronze with the saber together with Maurits van Löben Sels , George van Rossem and James Melvill van Carnbée in the team competition. In the individual he was eliminated with the sword and also in both saber competitions in the preliminary round.
East rose to the position of Vice Admiral in the Royal Navy . From 1931 to 1934 he was in command of the Dutch Navy in the Dutch East Indies . Among other things, the suppression of the mutiny on the De Zeven Provinciën in 1933 fell under his command . During the Second World War , East was part of the Dutch resistance and was taken prisoner by the Germans until it was liberated by the Allied forces .
