Johannes Pantel

Johannes Pantel (born February 10, 1963 in Ahlen / Westphalia ) is a German doctor , geriatrician , gerontologist and university professor.

Live and act

Pantel studied medicine , philosophy and psychology in Heidelberg and London from 1986 to 1992 and passed the medical state examination in 1992 . In 1992 the doctorate and 2001 the habilitation at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

From 1992 to 1997 Pantel completed a specialist training at the Department of Neurology at the University of Essen and at the Psychiatric University Clinic in Heidelberg . In 1994 he was licensed to practice medicine. He has been a specialist in psychiatry since 1997 and a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy since 2002 . In 2000 he completed further training in clinical geriatrics. At the same time, Pantel was senior physician at the Psychiatric University Clinic in Heidelberg from 1998 to 2003 (including in the areas of acute psychiatry, addiction therapy and suicide care), in 1998 and 1999 accompanied by research and study stays at the Mental Health Clinical Research Center ( University of Iowa / USA ) and at Harvard Medical School ( Boston / USA).

From 2003 to 2008 Pantel held the endowed professorship for geriatric psychiatry (BHF-Bank Foundation) at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and until 2011 was head of the geriatric psychiatry and memory clinic at the clinic for psychiatry and psychotherapy at this university. In addition, he was Deputy Director from 2005 to 2011 and Acting Director of this clinic in 2009. Since 2011 he has been professor for geriatric medicine with a focus on psychogeriatry and clinical gerontology and heads the department of the same name at the Institute for General Medicine at the University of Frankfurt. From 2014 to 2016 Pantel headed the “Artemis” project, a study that examined how art affects people with dementia . In 2016, he spoke out in front of the Health Committee of the German Bundestag against an amendment to the Medicines Act (AMG) to liberalize group-profit research on persons unable to consent. In the Corona debate, Pantel took the position (including in the TV show Hart aber Fair ) that people should not be involuntarily quarantined because of their age.

Scientific focus

Pantel works and researches in particular in the early and differential diagnosis of dementia, dementia prevention and the development of evaluation of intervention programs and instruments to improve geriatric care. Further focal points are the care of the chronically ill in old people's and nursing homes and the psychosocial consequences of demographic aging.

Memberships

From 2004 to 2015 Pantel was chairman of the Alzheimer Society Frankfurt (AGFFM eV) , from 2005 to 2014 member of the steering committee Forum for Aging Sciences and Aging Policy (FAWP) at the University of Frankfurt and has been a member of the Interdisciplinary Center for Neuroscience Frankfurt (ICNF) since 2005 . He is also a member of the advisory board " Aging healthily and actively " of the Federal Center for Health Education , Chief Editor of " GeroPsych - The Journal of Gerontopsychology and Geriatric Psychiatry ", member of departments 16 (medicine) and 04 ( educational sciences ) of the Goethe- University of Frankfurt, deputy board spokesman of the Frankfurt Forum for Interdisciplinary Aging Research (FFIA) , 1st chairman of the Alzheimer Society Hessen eV , board member of the GRADE Center Aging and member of the board of the association Leben mit Demenz eV
