Johannes Schmidt (born February 5, 1861 in Greifenhain near Frohburg , † July 31, 1926 in Leipzig ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

Johannes Oswald Schmidt came from a widespread family of pastors and scholars. His grandfather Gottlob Christian Schmidt (1788-1853), married to Henriette geb. Zenker was a deacon and later a pastor in Kaditz and Meißen (from 1835). His father was the Protestant pastor D. Oswald Gottlob Schmidt (1821–1882), his mother Emma Louise b. Rose. On his father's side, Schmidt had seven uncles and two aunts, including Bernhard Gottlob Schmidt (1822–1869), Professor of Law in Leipzig, Benno Gottlob Schmidt (1826–1896), Professor of Surgery in Leipzig, Clemens Gottlob Schmidt (1827–1904), pastor in Colmnitz, Wilibald Gottlob Schmidt (1828–1877), high school teacher in Plauen, Bautzen and Grimma, and Woldemar Gottlob Schmidt (1836–1888), professor of theology in Leipzig.

Johannes Schmidt spent his childhood in Greifenhain. In 1872 his father was appointed superintendent in Werdau . From then on, Schmidt attended the grammar school in Zwickau. After graduation in 1880, he studied classical philology and history at the University of Leipzig , where he was particularly influenced by Otto Ribbeck , Justus Hermann Lipsius and Georg Voigt . On July 17, 1884, Schmidt was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate , on March 12, 1885 he passed the state examination.

At Easter 1885, Schmidt began as a trial candidate at the Royal High School in Leipzig. As early as June 15, 1885, he switched to the United Gymnasium in Plauen as a scientific assistant teacher , where he taught almost all grades of the gymnasium. In the summer of 1888 he represented a senior teacher position there. At Easter 1889 he switched to the Zwickau grammar school as a provisional senior teacher . On October 1, 1889, Schmidt was given a permanent position as senior teacher at the Princely School of Grimma , where he worked until he retired. He was later appointed high school professor and teacher. Since 1894, as a German teacher for the lower prima, he directed the annual theater performances of this class (between Michaelmas and Christmas).

In addition to the school service, Schmidt was scientifically active. For the winter half of 1892/93 he was given leave for a research trip to Italy and Greece. His main research interests were the poetics of Euripides and Greek mythology , especially the development of the saga around Odysseus in ancient literature. He wrote numerous articles for Roscher's Detailed Lexicon of Greek and Roman Mythology and for the Realencyclopedia of Classical Classical Studies (RE).

Schmidt remained unmarried all his life. Since his health deteriorated, he had to take longer leave from October 15, 1914. On April 1, 1915, he took early retirement. During the First World War , he was a volunteer in the administrative authority of Grimma. He died on July 31, 1926 in the Leipzig Deaconess House.
