Johannes Schuchard (born March 3, 1782 in Barmen (today a district of Wuppertal ); † January 13, 1855 there ) was a Prussian manufacturer and merchant. He is known for his commitment to legal restrictions on child labor.

Life

John Schuchardt was the son of Barmer Siamosen -Fabrikanten and Kirch master Johann Heinrich Schuchardt and Anna Gerdraut born, Outhouse. He ran a manufacture of silk and semi-silk waistcoats and ties and also ran a trade in twist and madder and was appointed municipal councilor in 1809 . From 1823 to 1843 he was the representative of the third estate of the city of Barmen on the Rhenish provincial parliament . He is one of the founders of the Elberfeld and Barmen Chamber of Commerce .

On his initiative, the provincial parliament issued a petition, on the basis of which the Prussian state in 1839 issued a “Regulation on the Employment of Young Workers in Factories” ( Prussian Regulation ), which forbade children under nine to work and those aged between nine and sixteen Working time limited to ten hours. This law is considered the first labor protection law for children and thus at the same time as the "beginning of state labor protection policy" ( Thomas Nipperdey ) in Germany.

As early as 1837, Schuchard had reported in a newspaper report about the suicide attempt of a twelve-year-old working-class girl and thus caused a stir.

On March 19, 1811, he married the daughter of a wealthy Velbert merchant, Amalia Friederica Koelver (1793–1865). From this marriage 11 children were born, including the merchant Hugo Schuchard (1825–1886), who bought Calenberg Castle near Warburg, had it rebuilt and completely renovated. Johannes' granddaughter Adeline Schuchard married the painter Adolf Erbslöh , his granddaughter Johanna Schuchard married the Eisenach Kommerzienrat Albert Erbslöh . Another grandson is the Eisenach painter Felix Schuchard .
