Johannes Selbertinger (born December 18, 1930 in Tegernsee ; † March 19, 2020 ) was a German painter .

Life

Johannes Selbertinger studied with Xaver Fuhr at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . Selbertinger is a contemporary of Helmut Rieger, Helmut Sturm and Lothar Fischer , who revolutionized against the dominant painting in Munich since the late 1950s.

In 1961 he took part in an exhibition by the artist group SPUR . SPUR members were: Sturm, Prem, Fischer, Kunzelmann and Zimmer, supported by Asger Jorn , the Danish painter from the tradition of the CoBrA group .

Johannes Selbertinger distanced himself from the group again because he did not want to submit to peer pressure and went his own way.

Towards the end of the 1950s, the leap into abstraction became apparent in his work. The result is pictures, expressively strong in expression, reduced to the essentials. The pictures live exclusively through color.

The palette of its colors and its spontaneous rhythm convey a certain energy that challenges the viewer and appeals to his senses - looking into the picture requires imagination, reflection and self-questioning from the viewer. At numerous exhibitions at home and abroad, at art fairs and in numerous public and private collections, Selbertinger's painting creates the ground for encounters and exchange across cultures and generations.

In 1959 Selbertinger was a founding member of the Free Munich and German Art Association, FMDK. An important motive for founding the FMDK was to represent young and avant-garde artists in public; the group SPUR was one of them. Selbertinger would like to create a cosmos with his pictures. He says: "Incidentally, the Greeks also used the cosmos as the order of heaven. It was the symbol for the beautiful par excellence". "According to Selbertinger, the creative process is ended when the work releases the artist from the picture." He is one of the most important living representatives of informal painting.
