from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Soreth , or Soretus (* 1394 near Caen ; † July 25, 1471 in Angers ) was a priest and prior general of the Order of the Carmelites .

Life

It is believed that Johannes Soreth joined the Carmelite order before 1417 in his native city of Caen, which he was eventually to reform. He completed his studies in Paris. There he also gave lectures on Romans , Galatians , 2nd Corinthians and Hebrews . In 1438 - after receiving his doctorate - he became a master of theology.

In 1450 he became vicar general of his order, on November 1, 1451 he was elected prior general . He held this office until his death in 1471. Through his intensive visitation activity he wanted to raise the spiritual level of the Carmelite Order. Soreth is considered to be the founder of the female branch of the order, the Carmelites , because he obtained the papal bull Cum nulla from Pope Nicholas V in 1452 . This document also regulated the establishment of a Third Order of Laity . With this the order was also responsible for pastoral care for these communities.

In 1866 the Catholic Church beatified Johannes Soreth. His feast day in the liturgy is July 25th, and in the Carmelite Order on July 24th.
