Johannes "Jan" de Klerk (born July 22, 1903 in Burgersdorp , Cape Colony ; † January 24, 1979 in Krugersdorp , Transvaal ) was a South African politician .

biography

First he was Minister for Labor and Public Works in the cabinet of his brother-in-law, Prime Minister Johannes Gerhardus Strijdom, from 1954 to 1958 . In the cabinet of Prime Minister Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd he held the office of Minister for Labor and Mining between 1958 and 1961. In addition, de Klerk was elected to the Senate in 1955, to which he belonged until 1976.

After South Africa was converted into a republic on May 31, 1961, Prime Minister Verwoerd appointed him to succeed Jozua François Naudé as Minister of the Interior in his government and was a member of this government until Verwoerd's death on September 6, 1966. At the same time he was Minister of Labor and Immigration for a short time in 1961 and then, as successor to Balthazar Johannes Vorster , from 1961 to 1969 he was Minister of Education and Minister of Art and Science.

Since leaving the government in 1969, he was the successor of Jozua François Naudé until 1976 as President of the Senate. As such, he was President of the Republic from the end of Jacobus Johannes Fouché's term of office on April 9, 1975 until Nicolaas Diederichs took office on April 19, 1975 . In January 1976, Marais Viljoen succeeded him as Senate President.

Jan de Klerk's son Frederik Willem de Klerk was President from 1989 to 1994 and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 together with Nelson Mandela .
