Johannes van Laar , with full name Johannes Jacobus van Laar (born July 10, 1860 in The Hague , † December 9, 1938 in Clarens ) was a Dutch chemist who was identified by the equation he established for chemical activity ( Van Laar equation ) is known.

biography

Van Laar lost his parents at an early age, his mother died in 1862 and his father in 1873. From then on, his uncle was responsible for him. After graduating from high school in 1876, his guardian decided against van Laars will that he should become a naval officer, so he came to the Koninklijk Instituut voor de Marine in Nieuwediep . After three long journeys on steamships , he reached the rank of sub-lieutenant in 1881 and then retired from the navy.

Laar began studying physical chemistry and mathematics by attending seminars with Johannes van der Waals and Jacobus Henricus van't Hoff, both professors at the University of Amsterdam . His education made a doctorate and thus a career at a Dutch university impossible. After working as a teacher at secondary schools in Middelburg and Utrecht , he became a private lecturer at the University of Amsterdam in 1898 and assistant to Bakhuis Roozeboom in 1902 . Laar was appointed lecturer in mathematics in 1907, but his application for a professorship was rejected in 1910. This refusal led to a nervous breakdown , which is why he had to resign.

In 1912 he moved to Tavelsur-Clarens near Montreux in Switzerland , where he lived until his death in 1938.
