Johannes von Velen (* 1556 ; † August 1616 in Münster ) was canon in Münster and the Münster district administrator.

Origin and family

Johannes von Velen was the son of Hermann von Velen and his wife Maria (Margaretha) von Morrien (1523–1596) of the Westphalian noble family von Velen . His siblings were

  • Adrian (1540–1594, Canon in Münster and Osnabrück)
  • Alexander (1556–1630, court marshal and official drove)
  • Reiner († 1561, cathedral vicar, Vicedominus)
  • the canons Elisabeth, Sophia, Anna and Agnes

Successful asset management by the father made it possible to provide Johannes and all of his siblings with benefices .

Life

Johannes von Velen studied at the University of Bologna in 1573/1574 . He received a cathedral priest in Münster . On November 18, 1581, after the death of Bitter von Raesfeld, he came into the possession of the cathedral coast with the associated archdeacon of Winterswijk. With great zeal he pursued the goal of re-establishing the Catholic church regime. He had little success, however, because the area was part of the United Provinces . He was appointed to the Münster district administrator on March 7, 1590 and stayed as envoy of the elector in July 1594 at the Reichstag in Regensburg .

Johannes von Velen was buried in the cathedral in Münster. His grave slab is in the north aisle.
