history

prehistory

The tolerance patent issued by Emperor Joseph II in 1781 gave the possibility of initially restricted exercise of the Protestant faith in Carinthia. So small evangelical communities were formed in Upper Carinthia. The Evangelicals in Lower Carinthia and thus also Klagenfurt were initially assigned to the pastorate in Arriach. Then the Klagenfurt Evangelical Eggen at Kraigerberg , a branch community of Gnesau, were assigned. With the court chancellery decree of July 19, 1808, permission came to set up an own pastorate in Feldkirchen, to which Klagenfurt, Himmelberg, Steuerberg, Eggen am Kraigerberg and Wolfsberg now also belonged. In 1844 there were 67 Protestants in Klagenfurt. The Klagenfurt branch belonged to the Feldkirchen parish. From 1855 Klagenfurt was a permanent parish vicariate of Waiern-Feldkirchen.

Establishment

In 1858, an inn with land at Linsengasse 17 was bought and converted into a rectory. This was an important step towards making the parish independent and building a new church. The foundation stone for a church in Klagenfurt on the Lend Canal was laid on September 30, 1863. This turned out to be a great festival of evangelical life, which was largely silenced by the Counter Reformation. On January 19, 1864, the independent parish was founded in Klagenfurt and on September 30, 1866 the new church on the Lend Canal was inaugurated.

20th century

In 1903 the widow and orphan aid was founded, which should have a supportive effect in difficult situations. A Protestant daughter's home and a Protestant student residence were an important contribution to the Protestant Klagenfurt. In 1904 there were 1,000 Protestant Christians living in Klagenfurt, with 355 church entries in particular between 1899 and 1904. In 1914 the community already had 3,000 members. In addition to Klagenfurt, there were also sermons at St. Veit (independent since 1920), Völkermarkt (1954), Wolfsberg (1934), Pörtschach (1954) and Ferlach. In 1909 a new rectory was built. The two world wars put the community in a situation of great need and concern. The problematic situations, which also included the destruction of the church and the rectory as well as the melting of bells, could be mastered.

In 1967 the community area was divided up by the large number of Protestant Christians and the Evangelical Parish AuHB Klagenfurt Ost, now known as the Christ Church , was founded. The inauguration of the new church in the east of Klagenfurt took place on May 23, 1968.

Arson 2018

On September 15, 2018, a fire was set under the gallery. Although only one pew caught fire, the smoke caused considerable damage to the entire building. A suspect was arrested the following week. He is suspected of three other arson attacks and is essentially confessed. In addition to the question of perpetration, the suspect's mental health problems raise the question of guilty responsibility. During the renovation, the congregation moved to the Christ Church. The church reopened in December 2018.

Today the two evangelical parishes in the city and in rural areas have around 7500 members.

Johanneskirche

The north-facing neo-Gothic church building with a low recessed choir and a southern polygonal facade tower with a pointed helmet was built from 1864 to 1866 according to the plans of the architect Anton Bierbaum . The facade has buttresses and tracery windows. The nave and choir have wall paintings from the construction period, the open roof structure is decorated in color. There is a wooden gallery on two pillars with a straight parapet.

The neo-Gothic altar from the construction period was heavily modified in 1967 by the restorer Lukas Arnold the Elder and supplemented with a crucifix by Arnold. On Holy Saturday in 2009, this crucifix was expertly removed by the church restorer Lukas Arnold the Youngest. The chancel was redesigned in two steps in 2009 and 2010. A glass work of art by Carinthian artist Valentin Oman in cooperation with the glass workshop sanktmauritius has been forming the new altarpiece since Christmas 2009. A new altar table was placed in the apse in June 2010 . The official presentation of the redesign took place during the community festival on June 20, 2010.

The bells were cast by Albert Samassa in Laibach in 1866.

organ

In 1987 the organ builder Gerhard Schmid (Kaufbeuren) built a new organ in the existing neo-Gothic organ case . It replaces a pneumatic cone chopping instrument with 16 stops on two manuals and a pedal , which was built in 1925. The Schmid organ has 30 registers (1764 pipes) on three manuals and a pedal. Nine registers from the old organ were reused. The slider chests -instrument has mechanical tracker action .
