John A. Focht

John Arnold Focht junior (born August 31, 1923 in Rockwall , Texas , † October 22, 2010 in Houston , Texas) was an American civil engineer ( geotechnical engineering ).

Focht studied at the University of Texas at Austin (Bachelor 1944) and Harvard University (Master 1947). He then worked until 1953 in the soil mechanics department of the Waterways Experimental Station of the United States Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg , Mississippi . From 1953 he was with McClelland Engineers (founded by Bramlette McClelland ) where he was Vice President and 1987 to 1990 CEO.

In his research, he was particularly concerned with the load-bearing capacity (under vertical and horizontal loads) of piles for drilling rigs.

In 1993 he was a Terzaghi Lecturer . In 1957 and 1976 he received the Middlebrooks Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the State of the Art Award from the ASCE. He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering .
