Rockwall is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Rockwall County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located on Lake Ray Hubbard about 15 km east of Dallas and has a total area of 58.7 km², of which 1.0 km² is water.

According to the census in 2000 , 17,976 people lived here in 6,605 households and 5,158 families. The population density was 311.5 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 91.35% White, 3.00% African American, 0.38% Native American, 1.39% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 2.57% other ethnic groups. About 1.28% were mixed race and 6.44% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,605 households, 39.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 66.8% of these were married couples living together. 8.7% were single mothers and 21.9% were non-families. 18.6% of all households were single households and 5.4% had people who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.06.
27.5% of the population were under 18 years old, 6.9% 18 to 24, 30.9% 25 to 44, 25.1% 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 95.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 92.1 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 65,411 , and the median income for a family is $ 75,121. Males had a median income of $ 55,370 versus $ 35,139 for females.
