John Ball (geologist)

John Ball (* 15. February 1872 in Derby ; † 11. July 1941 in Port Said ) was a British geologist , geographer and mining - engineer .

Ball was born to Ebenezer Ball and Louisa Ball. He completed his apprenticeship at Phoenix Foundry Co. and was involved in the construction of Battersea Bridge and the Liverpool Overhead Elevated Railway. He later studied at various universities such as the Royal School of Miners , the Bergakademie Freiberg and the University of Zurich . From 1909 he was a member of the Institut d'Égypte in Cairo .

First he worked as a mining engineer on the Isle of Man , in Germany and in Spain . In 1897 he joined the Geological Survey of Egypt . Here he worked in the Egyptian part of the Libyan desert , in Nubia or Aswan and on the Sinai . In 1919 he was appointed director of the Desert Survey , four years later he presented the first comprehensive map of Egypt on a scale of 1: 500,000.

He has received numerous awards for his work.
