Benson began his playing career with Manchester City (1961 to 1964) before playing for the teams of Torquay United between 1964 and 1970 and Bournemouth AFC (1970 to 1973). He was one of the first choices as team captain of coach John Bond , whom he knew from playing days.

He then played for a year for Norwich City , the so-called "The Canaries", where he scored 1 goal in 37 appearances. He took positions as a defender , where he temporarily took over the central defensive position of Duncan Forbes , the team captain of Norwich City from 1969 to 1976. His last game for Norwich City was probably his most notable - a 2-2 draw against Manchester United in the semi-finals of the League Cup at Old Trafford in January 1975.

Two weeks later he returned as a player- coach at Bournemouth AFC, before returning to Norwich City in 1979 as a youth coach and talent scout. In October 1980 he left Norwich City and followed John Bond, who became the Manchester City team manager , as an assistant, as the then club chairman Sir Arthur South proposed him as a potential successor to Bond.

After briefly coaching Manchester City and Burnley FC, some coaching activities abroad followed. In 1994 he returned to Norwich City, where he was initially an administrative assistant to coach John Deehan before becoming assistant to transition coach Gary Megson in 1995 .
