John Matthew Deehan (born August 6, 1957 in Solihull ) is a former English football player and coach . As a player, he won the English League Cup in 1977 with Aston Villa and 1985 with Norwich City .
Player career
Aston Villa (1975-1979)
John Deehan began his career in the Football League First Division in 1975/76 at Aston Villa and achieved relegation with the promoted team. 1976/77 Deehan (27 games / 13 goals) finished the season with Villa in fourth place in the table and was only six points behind champions Liverpool . The good playing time was crowned by winning the English league cup in the final against FC Everton .
In September 1979 he moved to league rivals West Bromwich Albion and finished the 1979/80 season in tenth place. The club from West Bromwich was more successful in 1980/81 with fourth place in the table. However, Deehan did not come into its own as desired and moved to Norwich City in December 1981 .
Norwich City (1981-1986)
With the second division, he rose to the end of the season in the first division and achieved relegation in the First Division 1982/83 . John Deehan scored twenty goals in forty league games and was in third place on the top scorer list along with John Wark of Ipswich Town and Bob Latchford of Swansea City. Despite thirteen goals from Deehan, Norwich rose to the second division in 1985, but won the league cup with a 1-0 win over Sunderland AFC .
After further positions at Ipswich Town , Manchester City and Barnsley FC , he ended his playing career in 1990.
Coaching career
Norwich City (1994-1995)
In 1992 he began working as an assistant coach at the first division club Norwich City , which was trained by Mike Walker , and reached third place in the 1992/93 Premier League . Coach Mike Walker left Norwich on January 6, 1994 to be the new coach of Everton FC and was replaced by Deehan. After twelfth place in the Premier League in 1993/94 , Norwich rose in 1994/95 as third from bottom in the second division. Deehan's Norwich office ended July 31, 1995.
Wigan Athletic (1995-1998)
At the beginning of the 1995/96 season he took over the coaching position at the fourth division Wigan Athletic . In 1997 he won the championship in the Third Division with his team . After relegation in the 1997/98 season, he moved to Sheffield United as assistant coach of Steve Bruce . In the following years he worked as an assistant coach at Huddersfield Town and Aston Villa.
