John Bickersteth

John Monier Bickersteth , OBE , KCVO ( September 6, 1921 - January 29, 2018 ) was a British Anglican clergyman . He was Bishop of Bath and Wells from 1975 to 1988 .

Life

Bickersteth came from a family with clerical backgrounds spanning several generations; a total of six family members became bishops . He was born to Rev. Canon Edward Monier Bickersteth. His mother was a friend of the actress Dame Sybil Thorndike .

Bickersteth spent his childhood in London and grew up in a village near Canterbury in the county of Kent on. He attended rugby school and Christ Church College at Oxford University . From 1941 to 1946 he was drafted for military service and military service. He served with the Buffs , the 3rd Infantry Regiment (Royal East Kent Regiment), and participated in the Allied landings in Normandy . He was also stationed with the Royal Artillery in British India .

His theological training as a priest took place at Wells Theological College . In 1950 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1951 he was ordained a priest. At the beginning of a priestly career there was a position as vicar ( curate ) at St Matthew's Church in the Moorfields district of Bristol from 1950 to 1954 . From 1954 to 1962 he was active in the Ministry Training Convention in the priestly formation; he was also pastor ( Vicar ) at St John's Church, Hurst Green in the county of Surrey held. This was followed from 1962 a position as pastor ( Vicar ) at St Stephen's Church in Chatham in the county of Kent.

In 1970 he was ordained a bishop. He was suffragan bishop of Warrington from 1970 to 1975 . In 1975, Bickersteth was named the 75th Bishop of Bath and Wells in the Church of England by Queen Elizabeth II . In 1985 he celebrated a service at a hippie festival, which caused a stir. He retired at the end of October 1988. After retiring from church service, he criticized the Church of England for his view of appointing too many bishops.

He was Director ( Director ) of the Somerset Wildlife Trust and the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust .

From 1979 to 1989 he held the honorary office of the Clerk of the Closet . He was the first court chaplain of the queen to be a member of the royal household.

Bickersteth was married; on April 20, 1955 he married Rosemary Stevens, the daughter of Edward Stevens and Muriel Cleveland-Stevens.

Membership in the House of Lords

Bickersteth was an official member of the House of Lords in his capacity as Bishop of Bath and Wells from October 1981 to October 1988 as Spiritual Lord . He gave his inaugural address on November 11, 1982 on housing policy and homelessness , especially the homelessness of young people. In Hansard , Bickersteth's verbal contributions from 1982 to 1987 are documented. In October 1987, he last spoke in the House of Lords. His membership in the House of Lords ended when he retired as Bishop of Bath and Wells in October 1988.
