John Connolly (Bishop)

John Connolly OP (* 1750 ; according to other sources 1751; in Monknewton near Slane , County Meath , Ireland ; † February 6, 1825 in New York City ) was Bishop of New York .

Life

John Connolly entered the Dominican Order , who sent him to Rome to study. He was ordained a priest on September 24, 1774 and stayed in Rome as a professor, liaison for the Irish bishops and prior of the Dominican Convention of San Clemente .

Pope Pius VII appointed Connolly second Bishop of New York on October 4, 1814. On November 6th of the same year the Archbishop of Fermo , Cardinal Cesare Brancadoro , ordained him as a bishop ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishops Giovanni Francesco Guerrieri and Giovanni Marchetti .

He reached New York only a year after his episcopal ordination. However, this made him the first local bishop, as his predecessor Richard Luke Concanen OP had died before the crossing to America.
