John Cooper (athlete)
John Cooper ( John Hugh Cooper ; born December 18, 1940 in Bromyard , Herefordshire , † March 3, 1974 in Ermenonville ) was a British hurdler .
John Cooper was a member of the British 4-by-400-meter relay , which won the silver medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics in a time of 3: 01.6 min with Tim Graham , Adrian Metcalfe , Cooper and Robbie Brightwell .
Cooper's specialty was the 400-meter hurdles . At the 1964 Games, he finished second in 50.1 seconds behind world record holder Rex Cawley (USA), thus winning his second silver medal.
At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, he only reached the semifinals over the long hurdles and was eliminated in seventh with 50.8 seconds. The finals were won by his compatriot and successor as the best British long hurdler David Hemery .
John Cooper was killed in the crash of Turkish Airlines Flight 981 .
