John Cooper (engineer)

John Cooper CBE (* 17th July 1923 in Kingston upon Thames , Surrey ; † 24. December 2000 ) was a British car - designer and postwar - racer built, who is also a successful race car.

In 1946 he and his father Charles founded the Cooper Car Company , which soon developed into a successful Formula 3 and Formula 2 racing car manufacturer.

A few years later, his greatest influence on Formula 1 was the design of the mid-engined car, in which the engine was not placed in front of the driver, as was common at the time, but behind him. The first victories celebrated the Cooper in the 1958 season , in the years 1959 and 1960 was Jack Brabham in Cooper even world champion.

John Cooper's cars drove in Formula 1 races until the late 1960s, with Stirling Moss , Bruce McLaren and Jochen Rindt among the most famous Cooper drivers alongside Jack Brabham . In 1965, John Cooper sold his Formula 1 team.

John Cooper not only built Formula 1 cars, he was just as successful with tuning the Mini , which was successful in rallies as the Mini Cooper in the 1960s and became a cult car.

John Cooper died in 2000 77-year-old in the year of cancer .
