John Dauth

John Cecil Dauth AO LVO (born April 9, 1947 in Brisbane ) is an Australian diplomat.

Dauth studied at the University of Sydney , where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1969 . In 1969 he worked in the Australian Foreign Ministry. His first post took him to Nigeria , where he was first third and later second secretary at the Australian embassy in Lagos from 1970 to 1972 . From 1974 to 1976 he was First Secretary at the Australian Embassy in Islamabad . Dauth was temporarily transferred from 1977 to 1980 to Buckingham Palace to work there as Assistant Press Secretary to the Queen and Press Secretary to the Prince of Wales . For his services, Dauth was appointed Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order in 1980. On his return he was head of the Commonwealth and Multilateral Organizations Section at the Australian Foreign Office in Canberra from 1980 to 1982 . During his further diplomatic career served Dauth 1983-1985 as charge d'affaires at the Australian Embassy in Tehran and was 1986-1987 General at the Australian Consulate General in Noumea , capital of the French overseas territory New Caledonia . After he was declared persona non grata by the French government because he was accused of being close to the Kanak independence movement, Dauth had to leave New Caledonia.

Back in Australia, he now held several positions in the State Department. He was Assistant Secretary in the Public Relations Department from 1987 to 1989 , then Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Gareth Evans from 1989 to 1991, and then from 1991 to 1993 as First Assistant Secretary in the International Security Division . From 1996 to 1998 Dauth was First Assistant Secretary of the South and South-East Asia Division . Between 1993 and 1996 he was High Commissioner in Malaysia .

2001 Dauth became Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations in New York City . He held this post until 2006 when he became the new High Commissioner in New Zealand . In 2008 he moved to the post of High Commissioner in the United Kingdom , replacing Richard Alston . In 2013 he was replaced by Mike Rann .
