John Dodson Stiles

John Dodson Stiles (born January 15, 1822 in Town Hill , Luzerne County , Pennsylvania , †  October 29, 1896 in Allentown , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1862 and 1871 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives several times .

Career

John Stiles first attended preparatory schools. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1844, he began to work in Allentown in this profession. Between 1853 and 1856 he was a district attorney in Lehigh County . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In the years 1856, 1864 and 1868 he took part as a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions . In August 1866 he was also a delegate to the National Union Convention in Philadelphia .

After the death of the MP Thomas Buchecker Cooper , Stiles was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due by-election for the seventh seat of Pennsylvania , where he took up his new mandate on June 3, 1862. After a re-election in the sixth electoral district of his state, he was initially able to remain in Congress until March 3, 1865 . This time was marked by the events of the civil war .

In the congressional election of 1868 Stiles was re-elected to the US House of Representatives in the sixth district of Pennsylvania, where he replaced Benjamin Markley Boyer on March 4, 1869 , who had been his successor four years earlier. Since he refused to run again in 1870, he was only able to complete one further term in Congress until March 3, 1871. After serving in the US House of Representatives, Stiles returned to practice as a lawyer. He died in Allentown on October 29, 1896.
