John Hickman (born September 11, 1810 in West Bradford , Chester County , Pennsylvania , †  March 23, 1875 in West Chester , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1855 and 1863 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Hickman enjoyed a private school education. He then began studying medicine, which he broke off in favor of studying law. After his admission to the bar in 1833, he began practicing this profession in West Chester. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In May 1844 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore , at which James K. Polk was nominated as a presidential candidate. Between 1845 and 1846 he was a district attorney in Chester County.

In the congressional election of 1854 , Hickman was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded William Everhart on March 4, 1855 . After three re-elections, he was able to complete four legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1863 . These were shaped by the events leading up to the civil war until 1861 and by the war itself since 1861. Hickman was a staunch opponent of slavery and belonged to the so-called anti-Lecompton wing of his party, which turned against slavery. In 1860 he moved to the Republicans , as their candidate he was elected to Congress that year. He was a loyal advocate of the Union cause and took a firm stand against the Confederation . From 1857 to 1859, Hickman was chairman of the Congressional Compensation Committee for the American Revolution; between 1859 and 1863 he headed the legal committee. In 1862 he was one of the MPs charged with conducting impeachment proceedings against Federal Judge West Hughes Humphreys . In the same year he renounced another congressional candidacy.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Hickman practiced as a lawyer again. In 1869 he became a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives . He died in West Chester on March 23, 1875.
