John Drew (musician)

John Derek Drew , occasionally Johnny Drew (born December 23, 1927 in Sheffield ) is a British jazz bassist of swing and modern jazz .

Live and act

Drew first learned the piano, at the age of 16 bass. He played in various bands for two years, including the British BBC . From 1954 he worked in the United States with Les Elgart , Gene Krupa , Stan Getz , Neal Hefti and Nat Pierce (1956), in the Miami Symphony Orchestra and in 1957 in the trio of singer Barbara Carroll . In New York in 1958 he worked as a freelance musician, among others with Peggy Lee , in 1959 with Marian McPartland and in the Sauter / Finnegan Orchestra. Drew has been involved in numerous recordings such as productions by Toshiko Akiyoshi , Dave McKenna , Benny Carter , Anita O'Day , John Glasel , Dick Garcia / Tony Scott ("A Message from Garcia") and Phil Woods ("Young Woods") ).
