John Dunovant

John Dunovant (born March 5, 1825 in Chester , South Carolina , † October 1, 1864 at James River , Virginia ) was a Confederate Brigadier General in the Civil War .

biography

Dunovant already served in the Mexican-American War and was seriously wounded at the Battle of Chapultepec on September 13, 1847 and therefore retired on December 7, 1847 from active military service . In 1855 he was taken over as a captain in the US Army , before retiring from active service in November 1860 after a broken leg in St. Louis .

After the start of the Civil War in 1861, he joined the Confederate States Army as a major in the militia and shortly thereafter became Colonel of the 1st Regiment of South Carolina ( 1st South Carolina Regulars ). After another illness-related absence in June and July 1861, he resumed his service in August 1861, but was released from service in June 1862 because of drunkenness. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed colonel and commander of the 5th Cavalry - Regiment of South Carolina ( 5th South Carolina Cavalry appointed).

Shortly after his arrival in Virginia in 1864, his regiment was placed under the command of General Fitzhugh Lee . In a battle at James River he was wounded and on May 28, 1864 hand afterwards in hospital from Richmond treated. On July 8, 1864, he returned to work despite the injury and wore an arm sling until his death .

On August 22, 1864 Dunovant was promoted to Brigadier General and the supreme command of General Wade Hampton III. subordinated to take command of the brigade previously commanded by Matthew Butler . On October 1, 1864, he died at the head of his unit after falling from his horse because of an enemy shot.
