John Edward Campbell
John Edward Campbell (born May 27, 1862 in Lisburn , United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland , area of what is now Northern Ireland , † October 1, 1924 in Oxfordshire , England ) was an English mathematician . His name is associated with the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula .
Life
Campbell was born in 1862 to John Campbell. He completed his studies in 1884. Campbell eventually won a scholarship to the University of Oxford and was made a fellow there in 1887. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1905 and served as President of the London Mathematical Society from 1918 to 1920 .
He was married to Sarah Hardman and had four children with her.
Services
Campbell is best known for his contributions to the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula .
He was reported to be a "charming and devoted teacher and advocate of women's education."
