John Ellis (saxophonist)

John Ellis Axson (* 13. April 1974 ) is an American jazz - saxophonist .

Life

Ellis grew up on a small farm in North Carolina and learned the piano as a child and later the clarinet. He was influenced by the music of Scott Joplin . He played the saxophone for the first time in a high school band. He attended the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem . There he studied oboe for a year and then switched to the saxophone. His teacher was James Houlik, who was also his most important mentor during this time.

He later moved to New Orleans and attended the University of New Orleans for a year , where he was taught by Ellis Marsalis , among others . After dropping out of his studies, he played in the Ellis Marsalis Quartet and appeared many times in and around New Orleans. After three years he left the city and played in various formations in Asia and Africa.

In 1996 Ellis released his first own CD, The Language of Love, and continued his jazz education at New York's New School for Social Research from 1997 to 1999. In addition, he was a member of Charlie Hunter's formation for six years and also played a number of albums here.

John Ellis played and plays at various concerts and festivals together with different artists and belongs to the AMI Quartet of Anne Mette Iversen . Since 2002 Ellis has released his own albums regularly, most recently with his New Orleans band Double Wide , which includes the sousaphonist Matt Perrine, accordionist and keyboardist Gary Versace and drummer Jason Marsalis . In 2012 he played with this band at the Newport Jazz Festival .
