John Erskine, 21st Earl of Mar

John Erskine, 21st Earl of Mar (* after 1610; † September 1668 in Alloa ), was a Scottish nobleman .

Life

He was the son and heir of John Erskine, 20th Earl of Mar from his 1610 marriage to Jean Hay, a daughter of Francis Hay, 9th Earl of Erroll .

With the death of his father in 1653 he took on the title of 21st Earl of Mar (first award), as well as the subordinate title of 14th Lord Garioch and 9th Lord Erskine . According to a decision of the House of Lords Privileges Committee on February 26, 1875, he is de iure also the 4th Earl of Mar (seventh bestowal).

He fought in the Battle of Philiphaugh in 1645 , was appointed Commander and Governor of Stirling Castle in 1661 , and in 1662 received the rank of captain in the Scots Guards . In 1660 and 1661 he was also a member of the Scottish Privy Council .

He was married twice. The first marriage was in 1641 with Elizabeth Scott, a daughter of Walter Scott, 1st Earl of Buccleuch , and remained childless. From his second marriage in 1647 to Jean Mackenzie, daughter of George Mackenzie, 2nd Earl of Seaforth , there were four daughters and his son:
