John Fernandes

John Fernandes (* 1936 in Udyavara , South India ) is a Catholic theologian and priest of the Diocese of Mangalore (South India). He worked as a parish priest and university teacher as well as in the social and interreligious field.

Life

After completing his school education, John Fernandes studied philosophy and theology in Mangalore, at Jnana Deep Vidyapeeth in Pune (India) and at the University of Innsbruck . After ordination in 1963 and three years of pastoral work in India, he received his doctorate in 1970 at the University of Trier on the subject of “Initiation Rites of Hinduism and the Liturgy of Christian Initiation”.

In India he worked from 1970 as:

  • Founding director of the Biblical-Catechetic-Liturgical Institute "Mangala Jyothi" Mangalore
  • Parish priest in Hosabettu, Katapady and Belman
  • Lecturer at St. Joseph's Interdiocesan Seminary, Mangalore in the subjects of liturgy and systematic theology
  • Professor & Head, Chair in Christianity, University of Mangalore (since 2011 Emeritus)
  • Founding President of the Catholic Priests' Conference of India (CPCI), 1986
