John Frederick Mann
John Frederick Mann (born December 16, 1819 in Lewisham , London , England , † September 7, 1907 in Neutral Bay near Sydney , New South Wales , Australia ) was an explorer and surveyor .
John Mann was the son of Lieutenant General Cornelius Mann and his wife Sarah, née Fyers. Before entering the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in August 1834 , he attended school in Gibraltar , where his father served. After four years, John Mann finished his military service and worked at the land surveying office in England. In 1841 he embarked on the Palestine and arrived in Sydney on March 6, 1842.
In 1846 and 1847 he was involved in Ludwig Leichhardt's second expedition as his deputy. In 1888 he published his book Eight Months with Dr. Leichhardt, in the years 1846-47 . In it he described that there had been numerous animosities between Leichhardt and himself and the expedition team. In this writing he justified his behavior and that of the team.
From March 20, 1848 until 1880, John Mann worked for the Surveyor-General Department . On April 16, 1857, he married Camilla Victoria, the daughter of Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell . With her he had two sons and a daughter.
