John Gribbin (2014)

John Gribbin (born March 19, 1946 in Maidstone / Kent ) is a British astrophysicist and science author who mainly writes on astronomy and related topics.

He holds degrees in physics (1966) and astronomy (1967) from the University of Sussex and a PhD in astrophysics from Cambridge University (1971) and has worked for Nature , New Scientist and The Times .

He teaches and researches at the University of Sussex and has written numerous popular science non -fiction books and some science fiction novels (including one co- authored with DG Compton ).

His best-known work is a book on quantum physics In search of Schrödinger's cat . Quantum Physics and Reality .

Gribbin's first book The Jupiter Effect , which was published together with Stephan H. Plageman in 1974, revolves around the curious prediction that the congregation of all then nine planets on one side of the sun will lead to natural disasters on earth in 1982. Los Angeles should also be destroyed by an earthquake. A year after the natural disasters did not materialize, Gribbin and Plageman published The Jupiter Effect Reconsidered , in which they revised their theories, but did not reject them. Both books became bestsellers in the UK. In 1999 Gribbin distanced himself with the sentence "I don't like it, and I'm sorry I ever had anything to do with it" (I don't like it and I'm sorry that I ever had anything to do with it). The Jupiter Effect made it into the Smithsonian Institute's top 10 never-come-down doomsday .

In 2009 Gribbin was recognized by the Association of British Science Writers for his life's work, and his contribution "Don't Dumb Me Down" (The Guardian on September 8, 2005) was named the best scientific newspaper article of the year.

novel

criticism

  • Thomas Roth on the father of mankind : "Hardly any science fiction novel in recent years has had such a depressing end. Because Gribbin's gloomy picture of an all too realistic future is based on precise social observations and scientific facts that belong to him - and here he is whole Scientists - can be extrapolated almost dispassionately. The style of the novel is kept simple, the story is told in a straight line and the characters unfold. "
  • Karsten Kruschel on The Ship of Visions : "In his little novel, John Gribbin celebrates thinking people in a really surprising and, above all, convincing way."
