John Hamilton (politician, 1754)

John Hamilton (born November 25, 1754 in York County , Province of Pennsylvania , †  August 22, 1837 in Ginger Hill , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1805 and 1807 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Born in what is now Adams County , John Hamilton grew up during the British colonial era. Nothing is known about his school education. In 1783 he moved to Washington County . In the following years he made a career in the state militia, in which he rose to major general until 1807. Between 1793 and 1796 he was the high sheriff chief of police in Washington County. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson in the late 1790s . From 1796 to 1805 he was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate . He was also an associate judge in Washington County between 1802 and 1805.

In the congressional election of 1804 , Hamilton was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 10th constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded John Hoge on March 4, 1805 . Until March 3, 1807 he was able to complete a legislative term in Congress . From 1820 until his death, John Hamilton was again an associate judge in Washington County. He died in Ginger Hill on August 22, 1837.
