John Paul Hammond (born November 13, 1942 in New York City ), also known under the name John Hammond Jr., is an American blues singer and guitarist . He is the son of well-known music producer and talent scout John H. Hammond . He did not grow up with his father, however, as his parents separated and he only saw his father a few times a year.

Life

He began playing guitar while attending a private high school and was particularly influenced by Jimmy Reed's slide guitar play , which he heard live at the Apollo Theater . John Hammond has been one of the most prominent figures in acoustic blues since the early 1960s . Some critics even referred to him as the white Robert Johnson . Not without good reason, because Hammond combines powerful guitar and harmonica playing with an expressive voice and a worthy stage presence. He discovered the niche of the guitar player with harmonica, who plays classic blues from the 30s, 40s and 50s. Recordings from the 90s also prove Hammond's skills as a band leader and electric guitarist.

Since his debut album, released in 1963 on Vanguard Records , John P. Hammond has recorded a total of 33 LPs. He received a Grammy Award in 1985 and has been nominated for four more. The last album was "Rough & Tough".
