John Hastings, 2nd Earl of Pembroke KG (born August 29, 1347 in Sutton Valence , † April 16, 1375 in Picardy ) was an English nobleman and commander. He was the only son of Lawrence Hastings, 1st Earl of Pembroke, and Agnes Mortimer .

marriage

Hastings married Margaret Plantagenet , daughter of King Edward III , on May 19, 1359 . in Reading . There were no children from this marriage.

After her death in 1361, he married Anne Mauny , daughter of Walter Mauny, 1st Baron Mauny , with whom he later had a son.

Military career

Hastings took part in the Castilian campaign of his former brother-in-law Edward of Woodstock , the Black Prince, during the Hundred Years War in 1367 . In 1369 he was accepted into the Order of the Garter. In 1367 Hastings was almost captured in an attack in Poitou , he did not want to share command with Sir John Chandos beforehand . But when Chandos heard of the Hastings plight, he released him.

In 1370 he took part in the sack of Limoges under Edward of Woodstock . The city of Limoges tried to free itself from the rule of the English, which is why Edward of Woodstock had the city plundered as part of a punitive expedition , 3,000 inhabitants were killed.

In 1372 Hastings was given command of an English fleet that was supposed to bring troops to France and was intercepted and crushed by a French-Castilian fleet under Admiral Ambrosio Bocanegra in the sea ​​battle of La Rochelle in front of the port entrance of La Rochelle . John Hastings was captured, taken to Santander , Spain, and ultimately died in captivity in Picardy, France.

Succession

He was followed by his son John (born November 11, 1372, † December 30 or 31, 1389 in Woodstock , Oxfordshire ), who was born a few months after his father was captured.
