John Hewer

John Hewer (born January 13, 1922 in Leyton , Essex , † March 16, 2008 in Twickenham , Middlesex ) was a British actor and an advertising icon ( Captain Iglo ).

Life

He spent his acting career mainly in British theaters ( London's Players Theater , West End Theater ). He has appeared in many musicals , most notably his leading role alongside Julie Andrews in The Boy Friend on Broadway in the 1950s.

Although rarely seen in cinema and television roles, he hosted the Canadian main evening variety show The Pig and Whistle between 1967 and 1977 . He achieved worldwide fame through the portrayal of the figure Captain Iglo (in the original Captain Birdseye ) advertising fish fingers . These TV spots ran intermittently between 1967 and 1998 until he was replaced by a younger actor.
