John Kirby is an American officer and former Rear Admiral in the United States Navy . From April 2015 to January 2017 he was spokesman of the US State Department , succeeding Jen Psaki , as communications director moved into the White House.

Life

Kirby grew up in St. Petersburg , Florida and studied history at the University of South Florida . After completing his Bachelor of Science in 1985, he earned two other degrees: a Masters of Science in International Relations from Troy State University and a Masters of Arts in National Security and Strategy from Naval War College .

Kirby graduated from Officer Candidate School in Newport , Rhode Island and entered service in 1986. He was a public relations officer on the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal (CV-59) .

In December 2013, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel appointed him spokesman for the Pentagon . The Republican Senator John McCain called Kirby in a radio interview as idiots.

In 2017, Kirby retired with the rank of Rear Admiral . From then on he became a permanent military and diplomatic advisor to CNN / CNN International .
