John Klanac (born July 20, 1988 in Buffalo ) is an American volleyball coach and former volleyball player.

Career as a player

Klanac began his volleyball career at Orchard Park High School in his hometown. In 2007 he began studying history at Ohio State University , where he played on the Buckeyes team. In 2011, the outside attacker, who also played in the junior national team, won the US University Championship with a final victory over the favored team of UC Santa Barbara . This ended his time at the university and since he did not want to switch to beach volleyball , he looked for a club in Europe. Finally, the German Bundesliga team RWE Volleys Bottrop signed the American. Klanac could not prevent the relegation of the RWE volleys from the Bundesliga 2011/12 . At the end of the season he left the first division and moved to Finland to Kokkolan Tiikerit ; there he became Finnish champion in 2013. In the 2013 season he was under contract with the Belgian club Waremme VBC . At the end of 2013 he went to Bahrain for five months at the Al Nasser Sports Club in Juffair . For the 2014/15 season he moved to Știința Explorări Baia Mare in Romania . From August 2015 until the end of the year he then played with Patriotas de Lares in Puerto Rico .

Trainer

After the end of his active career, he was initially a volunteer assistant coach at the University at Buffalo until mid-2017 , after which he headed the volleyball department at the University of Houston . Since April 2018 he has been the assistant coach of the Rice Owls , the women's volleyball team at Rice University in Houston .
