John Congos
John Kongos (born August 6, 1945 in Johannesburg , South Africa ) is a singer and songwriter .
Life
After John Kongos had some record successes with his band "Johnny and the G-Men" and as a solo artist in his home country South Africa in the early 1960s, he went to Great Britain in 1966 to advance his career. In April 1967 he founded the band "Floribunda Rose", to which Pete Clifford (guitar), Jack Russell (bass, vocals), Nick Doktor (drums) and Chris Demetriou (keyboard) belonged. After a single was released ( Linda Loves Linda ), Clifford and Doktor left the band, and with drummer Henry Spinetti the remaining musicians recorded three more unsuccessful singles as the psychedelic rock band “Scrugg”.
In 1969 Kongos released his first solo album on Dawn / Pye, produced by Gus Dudgeon , titled Confusions About a Goldfish , which was not very successful. After that, he concentrated on writing songs. Two of his songs, Won't You Join Me and Will You Follow Me, were great hits in Germany in 1970 and 1971 in German vocal versions by Daliah Lavi ( Oh, when are you coming and Will you go with me ).
He had his commercial breakthrough as a singer in mid-1971 with the Fly Records single He's Gonna Step on You Again , which was an international hit parade. In Great Britain, the follow-up single Tokoloshe Man was able to place in the top ten and his album Kongos , released in 1971, reached the top 30 of the LP charts there. However, there were no further successes.
John is married to jewelry designer Shelley and has four sons: John Joseph, Jesse, Dylan and Daniel Lee. They work together as a rock band called Kongos . John lives with his family currently in Phoenix (Arizona) in the United States .
