John L. Broome
John Lloyd Broome (* 1824 in New York City , † 1898 in Binghamton , Broome County , New York ) was an officer in the United States Marine Corps during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War . He was also the grandson of Lieutenant Governor John Broome .
Career
Broome received his officer license as Second Lieutenant in the Marine Crops in 1848 . His forty years of service included fighting in Veracruz , Alvarado and Laguna del Carmen , Mexico in 1848. As a senior naval officer in the West Gulf Blockade Squadron , he played a prominent role in the capture of New Orleans and all of the squadron's battles on the Mississippi River . He was wounded twice, being severely in the second Battle of Vicksburg .
Lieutenant Colonel Broome retired on March 8, 1888 and died in 1898 near Binghamton, where he was also buried.
Honors
The USS Broome (DD-210) was named after him.
