John Lathrop Throckmorton (born February 28, 1913 in Kansas City , Missouri , † February 13, 1986 in Washington, DC ) was an American general in the US Army , the 1967 commanding general of the XVIII. Airborne Corps ( XVIII Airborne Corps ) , from 1967 to 1969 Commanding General of the Third US Army ( Third US Army ) and most recently between 1969 and 1973 Supreme Commander of the US Strike Command ( US Strike Command ) and the US Readiness Command (US Readiness Command) was.

Life

John Lathrop Throckmorton, son of Russell Conwell Throckmorton and his wife Ruth Amarette Bullene Throckmorton, began officer training at the US Military Academy in West Point after attending the Culver Military Academy in 1931 , which he received on June 12, 1935 with a Bachelor of Science ( B.Sc.). He was then taken over as a lieutenant in the infantry and found various uses in the following years. During World War II he was from 1943 to 1946 as an officer in the G3 Division of the First US Army ( First US Army ) used in the European theater of war, and after his return from 1946 to 1949 instructor of tactics department at the US Military Academy . He was then commander of a battalion of the 5th Infantry Regiment stationed in Hawaii between 1949 and 1950 and took part in the Korean War as commander of the combat troops of this regiment from 1950 to 1951 .

After the Korean War, Throckmorton attended the National War College (NWC) at Fort Lesley J. McNair and was in command of the cadets at the US Military Academy from 1956 to 1959, before he was deputy commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division ( 101st Airborne Division ) acted. Then he was from 1960 to 1962 Secretary of the General Staff to the Chief of the General Staff of the Army ( Chief of Staff of the Army ) and triggered on July 7, 1962 Major General Theodore J. Airborne Corps ( XVIII Airborne Corps ) . On August 1, 1967, Lieutenant General Throckmorton succeeded Lieutenant General Louis W. Truman as commanding general of the Third US Army ( Third US Army ) and held this position until July 31, 1969, whereupon Lieutenant General Albert O. Connor succeeded him. Most recently, General Throckmorton took over in 1969 as the successor to General Theodore J. Conway as commander in chief of the US Strike Command ( US Strike Command ) , which was renamed the US Readiness Command (US Readiness Command) in 1972. In 1973 he retired from active military service and was replaced by General Bruce Palmer .

After his retirement, he settled in Fayetteville , North Carolina . His marriage to Regina Theresa Higgins on October 16, 1937 resulted in four sons. After his death he was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
