John M. Kirk

John M. Kirk is a Latin American scholar .

Life

He holds a Bachelor of Arts ( University of Sheffield ), Master of Arts ( Queen's University (Kingston) ) and a PhD ( University of British Columbia ). He teaches a variety of language courses (Beginner Spanish and Translation) as a professor at Dalhousie University , as well as others broadly defined as Latin American civilization. He has spent most of his research in Cuba and Mexico , where he travels frequently. He has published several books on international relations, history and culture in Cuba; he also taught on Cuba, Mexico and Central America . He also worked as an interpreter for former Prime Minister of Nova Scotia John Patrick Savage at meetings with President Fidel Castro , as well as with Aleida Guevara (daughter of Che), Adolfo Pérez Esquivel (Nobel Peace Prize Laureate from Argentina), the Chilean music groups Inti Illimani and Quilapayún and the Mexican presidential candidate Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas .

He is currently working on a study on medical internationalism in Cuba. Kirk helped develop the twinning between Halifax and San Francisco de Campeche in Mexico and leads the Dalhousie Study Abroad Program in Mexico.
