history

CBC Radio began broadcasting in 1936, making it the company's oldest broadcaster. In 1949, the broadcasting facilities and staff of the then Broadcasting Corporation of Newfoundland were merged to form the then newly founded CBC and with the merger of the province of Newfoundland to form the Canadian Confederation .

In early 1944, CBC operated two English-language broadcasters. The first (Original Network) became the Trans-Canada Network and the second (Dominion Network) was established with the CJBC station as the flagship in Toronto . With the exception of the Toronto station, all other 35 stations were privately operated. The program was simpler than that of the Trans-Canada Network, with more American program content. The Dominion Network operated mainly in the afternoon, while the local stations broadcast their program content during the day.

In 1960, the CBC began recording channels on FM. The three English-language transmitters located in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal broadcast a mono signal. Classical music was initially broadcast. The stations were supplied with the identical program. The programs were broadcast over landlines and microwaves. The program was maintained until 1962 until 1964 was switched to the stereo signal.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the station changed its program content. More news and live reports were broadcast in what was then considered a radio revolution. These changes started with national radio shows like As It Happens . The changes to the radio program progressed so that the CBC broadcast regional morning programs with the latest news, weather and traffic conditions. CBC Radio Winnipeg was the first broadcaster to adopt the new format. Followed by Information Morning from the Halifax broadcaster.

CBC Radio stopped broadcasting advertisements in 1974. Until 1995, the station took a break between 1:00 am and 6:00 am. In the same year the station started a night program CBC Radio Overnight with international news and other information programs . By the mid-1990s, most of the CBC radio stations had switched to FM.
