John Mantley
John Truman Mantley (born April 25, 1920 in Toronto , Canada ; died January 14, 2003 in Sherman Oaks , Los Angeles , California ) was a Canadian actor, writer, and producer.
Life
Mantley's parents were actors. He himself attended the Institute of Vocational School in St. Catharines , where he founded a student acting group. He later served as President of the Victoria College Dramatic Society . During World War II he received training as a fighter pilot and also produced shows for the British armed forces in the Far East.
After the war, he studied acting at the Pasadena Playhouse , where he graduated with a Masters . He worked successfully as an actor, screenwriter and producer, in particular of television series, first in Canada and later in the USA, he produced numerous episodes of Smoking Colts , as well as episodes of Crazy Wilder West and MacGyver .
As a writer, he is best known for the science fiction novel The Twenty-Seventh Day (German: Der 27. Tag ), the template for a film from 1957, for which Mantley also wrote the screenplay. It is about five people from five nations who each receive an ultimate weapon from aliens that they can use for their country within 27 days - or not.
Mantley died in 2003 at the age of 64. His estate is in the Performing Arts Special Collections at the University of California, Los Angeles .
