John Murray (politician)

John Murray (born 1768 in Potts Grove , Northumberland County , Province of Pennsylvania , †  March 7, 1834 in East Chillisquaque , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1821 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Murray was a cousin of Congressman Thomas Murray (1770-1823). He attended private schools and then worked in agriculture. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson in the late 1790s . Between 1807 and 1810 he was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives .

After the resignation of Congressman David Scott , Murray was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on October 14, 1817. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1821 . After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Murray returned to farming. He died on March 7, 1834 in East Chillisquaque, near his hometown of Potts Grove.
