John Neely (musician)
John Neely (born January 29, 1930 in Chicago , † October 8, 1994 in Richton Park , Illinois ) was an American jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet ), composer and arranger .
Live and act
Neely played with Clifford Jordan in 1949 and then became a member of the King Fleming Quintet (with Russell Williams and Lorez Alexandria ), which began recording for the Chicago label Blue Lake in early 1954 . In March 1957, Clifford Jordan and John Gilmore recorded for Blue Note Records ; Neely's composition Status Quo was recorded, which was later reinterpreted by Mike Reed . In 1960 Neely recorded with pianist Earl Washington for the Formal label ; The drummer Walter Perkins also played in the band . In the same year Neely was a member of the Lionel Hampton Band. The Down Beat wrote on February 2, 1961:
- "John Neely, 30 year old Chicagoan, is being hailed by his fellows as' one of the baddest acts in the country and the next BIG man on tenor" .
1970 recorded a formation around Lee Morgan , Hubert Laws and Harold Mabern Neelys Beautiful People .
