John Norton (athlete)

John Kelley Norton (born April 16, 1893 in Santa Clara , California , † December 28, 1979 in New York City ) was an American hurdler who was successful in the early 1920s. He started for Stanford University and the Olympic Club San Francisco , was 1.83 m tall and weighed 93 kg.

Norton won three American runners-up over 440 yard hurdles: in 1920 behind Frank Loomis , in 1921 behind August Desch and in 1923 behind Ivan Riley . Only the winning time was stopped.

On June 26, 1920, he set a new world record over 400 m hurdles in Pasadena in 54.2 seconds . With this he improved the twelve-year-old record of his compatriot Charles Bacon by eight tenths of a second. At the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp , in which he participated with Frank Loomis, August Desch and Charles Daggs , he lost his world record to Loomis, who won in 54.0 seconds. Norton won the silver medal four meters behind in 54.6 seconds, August Desch took bronze in 54.7 seconds, the French Géo André fourth place in 54.8 seconds. All times except the winning time were estimated.

John Norton was able to place himself in the top ten of the world rankings five times:

  • 1915 4th place over 400 m hurdles in 56.9 seconds (run on September 25th)
  • 1920 1st place over 400 m hurdles in 53.9 seconds and 5th place over 110 m hurdles in 15.1 seconds (both ran on June 26th in Pasadena)
  • 1921 2nd place over 400 m hurdles in 53.1 seconds (run on July 4th in Pasadena)
  • 1924 8th place over 400 m hurdles in 54.4 seconds (run on June 13th in Cambridge )
