John P. Morrissey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Patrick Morrissey (born December 31, 1968 in Cork , Ireland ) is an Irish microbiologist and biotechnologist . Since 2000 he has been working and teaching as professor of microbiology at University College Cork . He mainly works on the optimization of yeasts for industrial biotechnology , but also deals with numerous other organisms.

life and work

John Morrissey studied microbiology at University College Cork, graduating in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduating, he moved to the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg , where he worked in David Tollervey's group on his doctoral thesis in the field of yeast molecular biology, especially on specific snoRNA and the formation of rRNA in baker's yeast ( Saccharomyces cerevisiae ). He received his PhD for his work in 1994 and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley , in the United States from 1995 to 1997 .

From 1998 to 2000 he worked and researched at the John Innes Center (JIC) in Norwich, England, and dealt with resistance of fungi to antibiotics and natural fungicides produced by plants . He continued this work after moving to University College Cork in 2000, where he mainly worked with the microbiologist Fergal O'Gara to investigate the interactions of root bacteria with their host plants and their fungicidal properties. Since 2003, Morrissey has headed his own research group as professor of microbiology at the UCC, whose research focus initially continued with previous work. Morrissey continued to investigate the ecological relationships of bacteria in the root system of plants, the fungicidal effects of root-associated Pseudomonas species and their potential use in environmental biotechnology, as well as general biochemical relationships between bacteria and fungi. From 2010, Morrissey also dealt with the biotechnological use and metagenomics of marine organisms, especially sponges (Porifera), on which he also wrote several book chapters.

His current focus is on the molecular biology and microecology of yeast as well as the use of genetically adapted yeast cells for industrial biotechnology. Morrissey focuses primarily on the use of Kluyveromyces marxianus . Among other projects, he heads the European research projects YEASTCELL (until 2017), YEASTDOC and CHASSY with a focus on yeasts as production organisms.

Awards and functions

John P. Morrissey serves on the editorial board of FEMS Yeast Research . He is also a member and representative for Ireland of the International Commission on Yeasts (ICY) and was elected chairman of the eukaryotes section of the Society for General Microbiology (SGM) from 2013 to 2017 . He is also a member of the board of the Microbial Physiology Section of the European Federation of Biotechnology .
