John Postans took part in the 1908 Olympic Games in London in the trap part. In the team competition, he took first place with the first British team before Canada and the second British team. With a total of 407 points and thus two points ahead of the Canadians, the British, whose team consisted of Postans, James Pike , Charles Palmer , Frank Moore , Alexander Maunder and Peter Easte , secured the gold medal. Postans was the fourth best shooter on the team with 61 points. In the individual competition, he was tied for first place with 23 points after the first round when the Canadians protested against the ranking of the round. They were allowed to repeat the first round with one participant and the choice fell on Walter Ewing , who was to win the competition and after another shot finished the first round with 27 points. Postans did not participate in the subsequent rounds in protest against this decision.
